October 11, 2018, 5:30-7:30 PM
Hosted at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, 301 19th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55455, USA
As a part of our national Young Women Run event series, IGNITE is mobilizing young women across the Twin Cities to join GOTV activities and learn first hand what it's like to campaign for women candidates up and down the ballot. Volunteering on campaigns is a great way to flex your political muscle while building the skills and networks you need to run in the future.
Our program partner Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota will host an interactive workshop on strategies for mobilizing voters to get to the polls on election day.
Speaker: BreAnna Bemboom
BreAnna Bemboom is the Field Program Organizer for Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota (PPMNS) – and its Action Fund. She leads the team responsible for engaging volunteers and supporters in the organization’s political and advocacy work. Prior to joining PPMNS, BreAnna worked as a voter outreach coordinator, a grassroots organizer, and a field organizer at various political and advocacy organizations across the state.
Speaker: Irene Fernando, Candidate for County Commissioner, Hennepin County District 2
Irene grew up in a large and lively Filipino family, where she learned to believe in what’s possible. Her parents immigrated to this country in pursuit of the American Dream. Irene’s mother has been a nurse in Los Angeles county for 35 years. Working double shifts, she taught Irene the value of a strong work ethic. Her dad, a stay at home parent, taught her how to strategize, ask questions, and find creative solutions. While earning a Bachelor of Science in Business and a Master of Education in Youth Development Leadership, Irene co-founded Students Today Leaders Forever (STLF), a youth leadership nonprofit with a mission of revealing leadership through service, relationships, and action. She worked at STLF for 11-years, creating jobs and recruiting national talent into Minnesota. In 2015, Irene was selected to be a Bush Foundation Fellow and began teaching social entrepreneurship at St. Mary’s University. Currently, she works within a newer division at Thrivent Financial leading around organizational design, culture, and talent.
