10 tips for working remotely from our remote team

If you’re one of the many people who have just made the switch to working from home, you’re probably still adjusting to your new, unique work situation. Check out these tips from our very own IGNITE experts. We’re a national team that’s been working remotely together for years and have some tips to make working from home work for you.

1. Keep up your routines. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time you normally would. Get ready for the day and do your usual morning routine. This will mentally prepare you for the rest of the day.

2. Dress as if you’re going into the office. Would you wear sweatpants to give a big presentation? Nope! Wear dress pants or jeans so you feel like you’re at work. It’s all about doing what you would do on a regular work day, but at home instead.

3. Create a designated work space. This helps maximize productivity and increase focus, especially if you can recreate a work space similar to the one you had in the office.

4. Separate your work day from your home-life. Set clear transitions between the start and end of work and the rest of the day. Physical and mental boundaries will help you be mentally prepared to honor your personal time.

5. Set ground rules. Create a plan with those in your home about quiet hours and creating minimum distractions.

6. Grab what you need before starting your work day. Whether it’s water, coffee, or your headphones, make sure everything is by your side so you don’t get distracted searching for those things later.

7. Calendar out everything. Start the week out with a plan and put everything on there from checking your email to when you’re going to work on big projects to your meetings. That way, you have a clear idea of how your week is going to go and you can celebrate when you’ve met those accomplishments.

8. Make time to build relationships with your colleagues. Remember to ask “how are you” before diving into the work. Use icebreakers and check-in questions to keep building rapp

9. Stay active and get your steps in. Make sure you're not just sitting by your desk all day long. You can set an hourly reminder to get up and get moving, that way you can also take a break from the computer screen.

10. Remember to practice self-care. If you’re overwhelmed with everything going on, practicing yoga, meditating or listening to music can help you feel more grounded. Even taking five minutes at the top of each hour to stretch or have a cup of tea will set a better tone for your day.
